Postgres’s philosophy fundamentally clashes with real-world, high-stakes transactional integrity.
Banking, financial systems, and any mission-critical business computing rely on one core principle:
The application, not the database engine, controls the transaction.
This is non-negotiable because:
1. Predictable control – The application decides when to commit, rollback, or hold a lock. Any database overriding that logic breaks guarantees.
2. Atomic integrity – Every operation in a transaction must succeed or fail exactly as the application dictates, without the database aborting arbitrarily.
3. Consistency across systems – Legacy systems, multi-database deployments, and cross-platform integrations rely on deterministic behavior.
Postgres’s insistence on “MVCC purity” and transaction aborts on any error completely violates these principles.
For critical financial applications:
• You cannot let the database decide “I know better” than the application.
• You cannot allow automatic rollback on an insert failure if the app has a defined strategy for handling it.
• You cannot allow the database to silently interfere with table locks or operation sequencing.
Applications and their tried and tested algorithms, built over decades, — a universal, application-controlled transactional layer — is exactly what enforces the correct guarantees.
Postgres’s “dogma” isn’t just inconvenient, it’s actively dangerous if misapplied in this context.
In short: for banking and any system where transactional security, determinism, and application control are paramount, Postgres is the wrong tool.
